Whitney, Texas
HISTORY
Welcome to Whitney, Texas
The Getaway Capital of Texas.
Whitney, Texas is located in Hill County on State Highway 22 and FM 933. Whitney, established in 1876, was a railroad boomtown. However, a fire burned the town down in 1885, and citizens rebuilt it with lasting bricks. In 1955 a dam and reservoir project created Lake Whitney, and that same year, the Waco Tribune-Herald organized a first-of-its-kind competitive bass fishing tournament.

Battle Of The Benches
While in Whitney, Texas, the most intriguing thing that I noticed were benches on Brazos St. that spanned half the block. Since 1922, old men would sit, chew tobacco, whittle, and gossip. In 1949, some ladies had requested to have the benches moved, so the Mayor had the Chief of Police move the benches to the alley.
The "spit and whittlers" were outraged and called for a special election to have the benches rebuilt in their original location. However, the old men easily won the election 124 to 67.
Would you be upset if your favorite hangout moved to this alley?

Body Shop By The Lake
I spotted this first-generation Mercury Cougar next to a first-generation Ford Mustang outside a body shop in Whitney, Texas.
Did you know that the first-generation Cougars and Mustangs were closely related?
Mercury, a division of Ford, introduced the Cougar in 1967 as a luxury version of the Ford Mustang, which featured European styling through flip-up headlights and simulated wood trim, along with a longer wheelbase and V-8 power.
