Welcome to Shelby, Texas
A German Settlement With An American Name.
Shelby, Texas is located in Austin County at the intersection of FM 389 & 1457. Settled in the early 1840s by German immigrants, the town was named after David Shelby, one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, the original land grantees that made up the first colony in the Mexican state of Texas.
Many early residents were well-educated members of the German Adelsverein, many with knowledge of Latin, and were interested in the arts and sciences.
Shelby had a post office from 1846 to 1912.
