The Story

Early automobiles had large exposed radiators with radiator caps visible above the hood of the car. The radiator cap often was used to brand and decorate vehicles.

As car design evolved, radiators moved to be protected by the body of the vehicle. These new designs meant that radiators had protection from the elements, which added to their longevity, but unfortunately, that protection hid decorative radiator caps from view.

The hood ornament became a focal point for personalization, which remained popular with automakers throughout the 1950s.
