The Story

In 1926, the federal government designated Route 66 to traverse the Texas Panhandle. However, a dispute between towns the route would potentially service kept the ultimate path of Route 66 east of Amarillo from becoming finalized until 1930. With the completion of the road, Conway, Texas, quickly added services for motoring tourists.

With the completion of I-40, built 1.3 miles to the north of Conway in 1965, the town began to change as businesses failed and people moved away.
