HISTORY
Welcome to Willow City, Texas
Drive The Willow City Loop During Wildflower Season.
Willow City, Texas is located in Gillespie County on FM 1323. Willow City was founded by a slave-holding Baptist preacher who intensely disliked the Germans that mostly settled Gillespie County. Early settlers preferred to deal with Anglo-Americans and would do business in Austin, Texas, nearly 80 miles away, instead of Fredericksburg, Texas, only 15 miles away. Early on, the town was known as a criminal hangout, but it prospered anyways. In 1877, a post office opened, serving the community of Willow. Ten years later, the community name changed to Willow City. The Willow City post office remains open today, inside Hohmann's General Store.
