Rockwood, Texas is located in Coleman County on US Highway 283. Rockwood was first known as Camp Creek, Texas in the 1870s and was where a branch of the Chisolm Trail turned northwest. In the 1880s, a general store opened, and the town began to grow. However, when a post office opened in 1889, the settlement was renamed Discord, Texas due to a disagreement over the town's name. A year later, the town's 25 residents changed the name to Rockwood, and a post office has been open ever since.

In 1892 the town moved from the north side to the south side of Camp Creek after the discovery of coal. Rockwood has been in decline since the Great Depression, and there have been no known businesses in Rockwood since 1983.
