Melvin, Texas is the second biggest town in McCulloch County and is located on FM 2028, just south of U.S. Highway 87. The town's namesake, W. H. Melvin, settled in the area in 1874. In 1904 the townsite was platted, a post office opened in 1906, and the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1912. However, after incorporation in 1946, Melvin's population would soon begin to decline. That decline accelerated in 1972 after the railroad abandoned its tracks. Today, fewer than 200 hundred people still call themselves Melvinites, but at least the post office is still open on the town square.

The Melvin Store in Melvin, Texas last operated as a bar before the building became derelict. At that time, there was a sign on the side of the building advertising: Beer, Ice, Drinks, Pool, and Shuffleboard.

In the General Store's heyday, the Masonic Lodge was on the top floor.
