Cheapside, Texas

HISTORY

Welcome to Cheapside, Texas

Once A Major Commercial Center For Cotton.

Cheapside, Texas is located in Gonzales County on FM 2067. The first settlers arrived in 1857, and a doctor born in England named the town after Cheapside Street in London. In 1882, Cheapside established a post office.

Agriculture drove the economy, and with the success of crops, stores, hotels, and saloons opened in town. A Gonzales County deputy sheriff kept order. Both Masons and Woodmen of the World established lodges. Then, in the mid-1920s, an electric generator electrified Cheapside almost 15 years before other nearby towns.

Unfortunately, Cheapside, Texas saw its demise when the great depression destroyed the cotton market, the soil became worn out, and people migrated to cities after WWII.

Cheapside Community Church

Once a significant cotton town, Cheapside, Texas saw its demise when the great depression destroyed the cotton market, the soil became worn out, and people migrated to cities after WWII.

The Cheapside Community Church was built in 1897 and moved to its current location in 1949. For years the church split the month between Baptist and Presbyterian services before the town's population declined to what it is today.
